The Office of Care and Protection - Patients Section

This site tells you about our role and provides a single information point about the provisions contained in Part Vlll of the Mental Health (Northern Ireland) Order 1986, Applications for Controllership and Enduring Power of Attorney provisions.

The Office of Care & Protection [Patients] is dealing with high volumes of correspondence and is currently unable to deal with queries by telephone owing to staff shortages.

To ensure that essential services are maintained as far as possible, we ask that you email us instead of telephoning as we can get more work processed this way. Urgent enquiries should be clearly marked in the subject line of your email as URGENT and emailed to or if your enquiry relates to an Enduring Power of Attorney.

We will continue to assess all incoming correspondence and to action those requests and enquiries where a clear need for urgency is identified. To accelerate this process it is essential that all correspondence by email or in writing is clearly marked as urgent.

If you require information about making an Application for Controllership, Enduring Powers of Attorney, court fees or application forms, please check the information available on the website (OCP Patients Section) before emailing the office

We will endeavour to reinstate the telephone enquiry service as soon as possible but appreciate your patience and cooperation in the interim.
