This bulletin presents legal aid statistics up to March 2025 and covers the number of applications granted, and authorised expenditure, for both criminal and civil cases in Northern Ireland. Applicant and provider characteristics are also explored.
With an immediate focus on 2024/2025, comparisons are made where possible back to 2019/2020 - the year in which the Legal Services Agency Northern Ireland launched its new digital case management system (LAMS) as part of an extensive transformation program.
This release also introduces a number of enhancements to the series including full 2019/2020 expenditure figures, authorised expenditure in respect of taxation and further disaggregation of counsel payments to distinguish between Junior and Senior Counsel.
