Justice Minister congratulates Hydebank Wood Secure College on prestigious international award
Date published:
Justice Minister Naomi Long has offered her congratulations to the staff of Hydebank Wood Secure College, who have received a prestigious award from the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA).
The award recognises Hydebank Wood’s innovative and sector-leading work in rehabilitation, specifically acknowledging the success of its Secure College model in placing education, skills, and rehabilitation at the core of their work.
Minister Long said:
"This is an outstanding achievement and deserved international recognition for the dedication and hard work of everyone at Hydebank Wood. The entire ethos of the Secure College is centred on breaking the cycle of reoffending by equipping residents with the qualifications and practical skills they need to lead productive, law-abiding lives upon release.
“This award underlines that, although our prisons are facing many challenges, the Prison Service’s approach to rehabilitation is second to none.”
The Minister added:
“Hydebank Wood is not simply a place of custody; it is a place of learning and opportunity. The staff are to be commended for their commitment to justice through rehabilitation, fostering an environment where individuals can gain confidence, qualifications, and ultimately, contribute positively after they are released back into our community.”
Welcoming the Award, Hydebank Governor Richard Taylor said:
“This international award is testament to the work of prison officers in changing lives. It also reflects the tremendous work of our partners. Whether that is from our healthcare partners in the South Eastern Trust; our education providers in Belfast Met or through the many voluntary and community organisations who work with the College – there is no doubt this award belongs to us all.”
