AccessNI

AccessNI is a branch in the Department of Justice.  Its role is to process applications from members of the public who require a criminal record check for employment purposes.  AccessNI issues 3 types of check

Type of check Purpose How to apply Information disclosed
Basic

For general employment purposes, all posts in airports after the security search, civil service and other public bodies, bus and taxi operator licences etc.

Directly to AccessNI or through an employer or their representative or a licence provider.

Unspent convictions

Standard For Security Industry Authority licences or professional occupations for example lawyers, accountants Through SIA, an employer or their representative. Spent and unspent convictions, cautions and informed warnings
Enhanced with/ without a barred list check Working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults, taxi licences or working with controlled drugs.

Through an employer or their representative or licence provider.

As Standard, plus relevant police information and where appropriate a “barred list” check
