Justice Minister Claire Sugden has congratulated a Governor from the Northern Ireland Prison Service who received the ‘Inspirational Leadership Award’ at the UK Civil Service Awards held in London.

Justice Minister Claire Sugden

Austin Treacy has worked in the Prison Service for over 30 years and is highly respected as an innovative leader with a passion for rehabilitation and intergenerational crime.  The award recognised his work to transform Hydebank Wood from a Young Offenders Centre into a secure college – a first anywhere in the UK or Ireland.

Claire Sugden said: “Austin showed great commitment to transforming Hydebank Wood from a Young Offenders’ Centre into the first secure College in the UK and this award is testament to his leadership.

“Under his guidance and innovative approach Hydebank now places education at the centre of its work, encouraging people in custody to address their offending behaviour, preparing them to play a constructive role when they return to the community.”

Austin Treacy said: “I am very humbled by this award.  I know it is a cliché to say this was a team effort but that is the case.  The positive changes would not have been achieved without the support of Prison Service senior managers and colleagues.

“This award also recognises the excellent work of the Deputy Governor Richard Taylor, and the entire team at Hydebank Wood.  I also want to highlight the positive attitude of those in custody who have engaged with us to deliver the secure College.”
