Sugden commends work of RNLI

Justice Minister Claire Sugden has visited the RNLI Portrush Lifeboat Station and has commended the invaluable work of volunteers working across Northern Ireland.
During a tour of the RNLI base at Kerr Street in the town, the Minister met Darren Byers, Divisional Operations Manager and many local volunteers.
Following an opportunity to step on-board one of the lifeboat moored in Portrush harbour, Minister Sugden said: “The RNLI provides an invaluable service in keeping the public safe around our coastline. The men and women who volunteer to answer emergency calls in all weathers have helped save countless lives and I commend them for their dedication and commitment.
“The RNLI aims to reduce drowning by 50%, across the UK and Ireland by 2024. Given the dedication and enthusiasm I have seen demonstrated by the Portrush crew, I am confident that they will succeed.”
The station in Portrush has been operational since 1860.
The Department of Justice assumed policy responsibility for land and inland water search and rescue (SAR) in Northern Ireland in 2011. This visit is one in a series by the Minister to groups represented on the Northern Ireland Search and Rescue Practitioners’ Group.
