Premiere set for new short Film ‘Bubble’ at Crumlin Road Gaol

A compelling and deeply moving new short film, Bubble, written and directed by acclaimed Belfast playwright Patricia Downey of Spanner in the Works, will premiere at the iconic Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast.
Adapted from Downey’s award‑winning stage play Runny Honey, Bubble brings to the screen a raw, unflinching and profoundly human story inspired by the lived experiences of women within the criminal justice system. The film explores complex and urgent themes including addiction, mental health, domestic abuse, and the far‑reaching impact of crime on individuals, families and communities.
Filmed on location in Maghaberry Prison, Bubble offers a rare sense of authenticity, drawing audiences into a world that is often unseen and little understood. Its title reflects both the emotional isolation experienced by many of its characters and the reality of prison life itself - a “bubble” removed from everyday society yet deeply connected to the challenges within it.
Speaking about the film, Patricia Downey said: “Bubble is about giving a voice to women whose stories are too often unheard or misunderstood. My hope is that audiences will come away with a deeper sense of empathy - not just for those in prison, but for the circumstances, trauma and social issues that can lead people there. If it shifts even one perspective, it has achieved something important.”
Northern Ireland Prison Service Director General, Beverley Wall, praised the project, highlighting the role of creativity in supporting rehabilitation and greater understanding.
“Projects like Bubble are incredibly important because they help us to see the human stories behind the justice system. This film brings difficult, often hidden realities into the open in a way that is both honest and compassionate.
“The Prison Service focus is not only on safe custody, but on supporting people to reflect, rebuild and move forward. Creative work like this can play a powerful part in that journey - encouraging understanding and offering a different perspective on the lives behind the headlines.”
The production has been made possible through support from the Assets Recovery Community Scheme (ARCS), funded by the Department of Justice, alongside collaboration with the Northern Ireland Prison Service. It represents a powerful full‑circle investment, with funds recovered from criminal activity being reinvested into work that examines its consequences and promotes rehabilitation.
Following its premiere, Bubble is set to reach audiences beyond Northern Ireland, with plans for submission to film festivals across Ireland and internationally. The film aims to spark meaningful conversation about justice, inequality, and the potential for personal transformation.
The choice of Crumlin Road Gaol - steeped in history and symbolism -provides a fitting and powerful setting for a film grounded in truth, reflection and the possibility of change.
