  • Minister Long receives Policing Board independent review

    An independent review of the Northern Ireland Policing Board has been received by Justice Minister Naomi Long.

    The report has now been shared with relevant statutory bodies to review the recommendations pertinent to them and has also been shared with the Justice Committee as the scrutiny body.

    The Minister said: “I would like to thank Paul Sweeney and Dr John Topping for their commitment to this carrying out this review in such a tight timeframe.  I fully appreciate the challenging nature of a review of this type, and I thank them for their contributions and valuable insight.”

    The Independent Reviewer engaged with more than 70 stakeholders including statutory bodies and other parties of interest.

    Concluding the Minister said: “I will now take time to consider the report and give time to the statutory bodies to also consider the recommendations relevant to them.”

On 12 September 2024 the Justice Minister commissioned the independent review of the Policing Board and appointed Mr Paul Sweeney, former Permanent Secretary in the Northern Ireland Civil Service and Dr John Topping, senior lecturer of Criminology at Queens University Belfast to take the review forward
