Functions of the new Department of Justice

Date published: 09 May 2016

The new Department of Justice (DOJ) comes into effect today.

The department assumes the roles and responsibilities of the former Department of Justice, with the addition of the Planning Appeals Commission and Water Appeals Commission administrative support from OFMDFM.

The changes are part of the ‘Fresh Start’ agreement which involves restructuring the Northern Ireland government departments and reducing them in number from 12 to nine.

An overview of the departmental changes, including their functions, is available on the nidirect website.

News releases from April 2007 are available to view on the Public Records Northern Ireland (PRONI) website.
