Justice Minister Claire Sugden tonight addressed the 2016 Tolerantia Awards, hosted by the Rainbow Project for the first time in Northern Ireland.
The awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and organisations from across Europe who have worked to create societies free from homophobia and transphobia.
Minister Sugden said, ‘The ethos of the Tolerantia Awards is one I support as Justice Minister – recognising collaborative efforts to fight homophobia and, more widely, hate.
I am committed to doing all I can to ensure a safer community for everyone, in partnership with others in Government and beyond. When it comes to tackling hate crime and the prejudiced attitudes that cause it, we need to remember that we all have our part to play. It is important that we all set the standard and show leadership – condemning hatred and prejudice in all its forms, and supporting victims where they have been affected.
I am here tonight to show my support for communities and individuals that others would seek to marginalise, and to celebrate with you all the achievements of the Tolerantia Laureates in making our communities better places for all.’
