The work of this section is divided into two areas;
Electronics Casework
The Electronics Casework Laboratory perform a comprehensive range of digital and electronic forensic examinations for a variety of Customers.
Mobile Devices
Mobile devices such as Phones, Tablets, Satellite Navigation Devices & Dash Cameras including their associated SIM and Memory Cards can be unlocked, downloaded and analysed for live and deleted data. DEF are equipped with multiple forensic tools and advanced techniques which ensure comprehensive data recovery. DEF are accredited to UKAS ISO17025 for the Examination of Mobile Phones including their associated SIM and Memory Cards.
Computer
Computer examination products offered by the unit range from data recovery of live and deleted information, collated for viewing by the customer, to in-depth data movement and timeline analysis. Examinations may be targeted to check for specific information, track the origin of derived data and determine file associated meta-data; tailored to the customers’ requirements. This includes the examination of External Hard Drives, USB Flash Drives and CCTV Digital Video Recording systems.
In-Vehicle Infotainment & Telematics Systems
In-vehicle infotainment and telematics can be examined for electronic data such as vehicle events, location data and Bluetooth or USB connected device data. Services include scene and/or Laboratory based examination where vehicles require disassembly for identification and removal of electronic control modules for subsequent download.
Damaged electronic devices
Damged electronic devices may still provide a source of forensic evidence; the team provide a best effort reconstruction and repair service as part of the examination process. This involves work ranging from mobile phone screen replacement to complex component replacement or microchip removal and file system reconstruction. This includes devices such as Mobile Devices, Memory Cards, Solid State Hard Drives & Vehicle Infotainment Systems.

Reported information is presented as a Statement of Witness and if necessary, a digital sub-exhibit and attached report (subject to the quantity of data). 
Electronics Calibration
The Electronics Calibration Laboratory provide services in support of PSNI’s evidential breath testing & speed metering programmes. This involves the installation, maintenance and service/calibration of evidential equipment for breath testing and speed metering for which DEF is UKAS ISO17025 accredited.
