Permanent Secretary changes at Department of Justice

Justice Minister Naomi Long has thanked outgoing Permanent Secretary Richard Pengelly CB for his contribution to Justice in Northern Ireland.

The Minister has commented as Mr Pengelly completes his final weeks in post at the Department of Justice NI.

From Monday 15 April 2024, Mr Pengelly will be Chief Executive at the Education Authority.  He will be replaced at the Department of Justice by Hugh Widdis, Head of the Government Legal Service in Northern Ireland.

Justice Minister Naomi Long said: “I want to thank Richard for his service to Justice for the past two years and to wish him well in his new role.  Richard has a long and esteemed civil service career which has seen him undertake his responsibilities with diligence and dedication.  I have no doubt he will bring that same commitment to his new role.”

The Minister also welcomed the incoming new Permanent Secretary at the Department.  She said: “I am pleased to welcome Hugh Widdis who will take position as Permanent Secretary on 15th April 2024.  Hugh has a proven track record and is well respected amongst his peers.  I look forward to working with Mr Widdis in the time ahead and to delivering a new chapter for the Department.”
